Hike The Main Range

Summary: 24km Two Days

Trail Traversing Mount Northcote

Trail Traversing Mount Northcote

Walk the main range of Australia taking in our highest peak Mount Kosciuszko and some beautiful alpine flora and fauna lakes and mountain views.  Keep in mind that weather can change fast and dramatically in the mounts so be prepared even in the summer months.

We did this walk with an overnight stay at Lake Albina but the 24km can be done in a one day push if you get up early.   In which case doing the loop clockwise would properly be the better option and what most people appear to do.

Pros

  • Beautiful alpine environment
  • Beautiful alpine lakes
  • Highest point of Australia
  • Mountains
  • Easy trail to follow

Cons

  • Change of weather
  • Summer only (could be done on ski’s I suppose)

Lake Albina Hut

Lake Albina Hut Before it Was Demolished by NPWS (1982)

A great overnight hike we camped out at Lake Albina near the location of the old Lake Albina Hut (demolished using fire by NPWS in the summer of 1982).

Day 1

Starting out at Charlotte’s Pass we did the loop anticlockwise heading first towards Blue Lake then up to Carruthers Peak, Mt Lee and then stopping near Lake Albina for the night.  A bit of a slog with the first day being largely up hill and around 11km.  We were reward with a gorgeous few over the lake and down towards Gehii for the evening.

Day 2

We started the day with the hike up to Mount Kosciuszko and revealed in our triumph of being at the highest land mass of Australia.  The rest of the day we followed the fire trail from Australia’s highest public toilet at Rawsons Pass (Altitude: 2,100 Metres / 6,900 Feet) back to Charlotte’s Pass a walk of 13km’s.  Along the way we passed Seamans hut
