Fiji, Nadi & Denarau Island

Fiji Flag A quick post one of our experiences while honeymooning in Fiji.

I always feel a little disappointed when flying into an airport at night because you never really get a feel for your surroundings, never get soak in the scenery and check out the the coast line. It was like that when we flow into Honolulu for a quick stop over each way on our trip to Canada. Our flight into Fiji and Nadi (pronounce Nan-dee) wasn’t any different and I couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed about it. We where lucky enough to fly out during the day on our way home, with the short 20mins before we gained to much altitude to make anything out we spent guessing where we had been and where our island paradise Nanuya was, more of that in another posts.

One of the first things that struck me on or drive (transfer) out to Denarau Island and our fenced off paradise was the number of people hanging around on the side of the road doing not much and the 6 foot high, 3 strand barb wire fence around nearly every house along the road.

In contrast to this security or as a reinforcement off it, was the fenced off and relatively safe and opulence you see when driving over the bridge and past the guard house at Denarau Island. Denarau island is effectively a fenced of community for the luxury resorts. The Sheraton, Hilton, Western amongst others are all there with there tourists dollars fenced off from the rest of the mainland (a little cynical I know, but true).

Our first night in Fiji was spent at the Sheraton Hotel on Denarau Island, in an air conditioned honeymoon suite by the beach. We were still feeling a little sleep deprived as a hangover affect from the wedding and for the second night running we didn’t really drink any of the free Champaign they give you for the extra $50 you pay as a honeymooner. Laura was bummed about that, again :-) .

Stay tuned for some more honeymoon/wedding highlights.
