City to Surf 07

City 2 Surf Groud

I started running around November last year, I think more then anything, for the simple reason I couldn’t run. It sounds a little contradicting but I am not a natural runner. Being close to 6’6” tall I found the impact didn’t favor my lanky torso. Knowing myself and with the determination to keep going I knew I had to set myself some goals, targets to train for and work towards. The very first goals I set myself was to complete my first City to Surf fun run in Aug 07. Apparently it is un-Australian not to have participated in a City to Surf. So in order to get my citizenship I targeted the City to Surf 07

BoratInstead of boring those that actually read this with another narrative of the day’s events I thought I would list a few of the days highlights:

  • Throwing my warm up cloths to the side of the road and up a tree on College St near the museum along with everyone else. I pity those that took up starting positions along the edge of the road and near the trees and bus shelters as they end up where everyone’s dirty old cloths as people stripped off and through the old cloths to the side just before warm up.
  • Watching Borat in his man string doing pre race stretches and passing him in the race. Though I heard there where 3 and that Borat #1 completed the race in 51mins (a very reasonable time) and kicks my butt J
  • A false start to the HSBC group I was in. Watching the marshals at the front frantically trying to get +5000 to stop.
  • Running past the cover band playing “It’s a long way to the top” from the awning roof overlooking the road at Double bay and numerous other brass, acoustic bands along the route
  • Watching the huge line of people weave there way through the race course
  • Running all the way up heart break hill (yea) even with the numerous false tops to catch out schoolboy like myself.
  • Watching people stop for ice cream at the numerous Mr Whippies along the route
  • The numerous costumes.
  • Watching a St Johns Ambulance guy on a MTB taking his role way to seriously. I hope someone was dieing because he was power tripping big time.
  • Beating that guy just in front of me with the red shirt.
  • Finishing in under 90mins with an official time of 89:38mins getting me a place of 14,286th out of 53,113 or top 27%. Watch my finish on video
