Can I Count on It?

“Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.” Albert Einstein

Albert EinsteinWhat can we count? We can count money our money in the bank, we can count the number of houses we have (if we are lucky to have more then one), we can count the possessions we have. Sure we can count them alright, they are right there before our eyes but can we count on them?

“For the love of money is the root of all evil” 1 Timothy 6:10

If we spend our lives in pursuit of money, where will we get in the end? The same place as the next person. The accountant of a wealthy man was once asked how much money his deceased client left behind? and his response was “everything!”

Sure money can not buy you love, but from the perspective of someone that struggles to put food on the table money can go a long way toward happiness. Perhaps it is the pursuit of money that should be avoided? Will we ever be happy with the coins we have in our pockets? Or will we always want more, more, more!

“From dust we come and from dust we shall return”. Genesis 3:19

There are really only two certainties in life and they are taxes and death. Even taxes are not always a certainty. We could subscribe to the “He with the most toys at the end wins” philosophy but what sort of legacy does that leave behind? One of opulence and greed. Does the number of your toys count? Because in the end they will return to the earth from which they where forged.

“I love you”, “I love you more”, “No I love you more”. To many this is a sickening display of affection from one towards another. We have all heard it been said, the game played out, perhaps even played the game yourself. I think it does well to illustrate that it is hard to quantify love, how do measure ones love for another. We can look at a person and perhaps make a judgement or approximate measure of there love, but that is about it.

So what can we count on? Well I think the answer to the question is to count less on those things we can count (physical) because they can be taken from us just as easy as they came and count more on those things we can not (love, true, peace…)
